"The Greater Wrong of the Right" by Skinny Puppy is one of my favorite albums of 2004. Here's an summery of Skinny Puppy's writing philosophy from an article in href="http://remixmag.com/artists/remix_dark_arts/">Remix magazine that I think says it all... “We never sit down to write anything commercial, to write anything that really caters to any trend in music or any particular direction,” Key concludes. “We let ourselves be ourselves and just go back and try and discover why we make music to begin with. So in the end, I think there is a vibe that comes when you're not trying to fit in with a certain genre. We're not hip-hop. We're not house. We're not jungle. We're not a certain type of labeled vibe. People would like to call us industrial. But I think that's maybe a term that has come since. We just continue to do what we do because of the big question mark in the sky.”
New Order news and no one has died or been hurt. See I knew good news would surface at some point... New Order have revealed the title of their next album: "Sugarcane". The album, due for release in February 2005, was produced by Tore Johansson who previously has worked with Saint Etienne. The release will be the follow-up to the successful "Get Ready", which was released in 2001. No live dates have been announced so far however Peter Hook and Bernard Sumner have been scheduled for a DJ set at the Arc Club, in Brighton UK on New Year's Eve.
Interesting. It's always a good trick to rerelease things remastered and/or in a new format to make more money off of them for very little extra investment... Nine Inch Nails' "The Downward Spiral" will be released as a deluxe edition hybrid CD through Universal on November 22nd. This two disc package features redesigned artwork / packaging, plus a hybrid CD / SACD with the original album in stereo, high resolution stereo and high resolution 5.1 digital surround sound. Additionally the second bonus disc features a brand new compilation of remixes, B-Sides, demos and non album tracks including previously unreleased material. Please note, this release will play on both regular CD players and SACD players too. Also expected is "The Downward Spiral" as a Dual Disc. Dual Disc is a new two-sided disc format combining a CD on one side with a DVD on the other. This CD / DVD Dual Disc includes the entire 1994 album remastered in CD stereo, plus videos, image gall
John Peel is a pretty big name it's a great sorrow to see him pass, he definitely loomed large in my musical upbringing since I have been into underground British music as long as I have been into to music. I don't want to have this become only a blog for bad news, but this sort of thing seems to happen in bunches. From the NYTimes.com: John Peel, BBC Radio Disk Jockey, Dies at 65 By BEN SISARIO Published: October 26, 2004 John Peel, the BBC radio disc jockey who was a champion of innovative and independent music for nearly four decades, died on Monday night in Cuzco, Peru. He was 65 and was a longtime resident of Great Finborough, a village in Suffolk. The BBC reported that he suffered a heart attack while on holiday with his wife, Sheila. A broadcasting icon in Britain and perhaps the only British D.J. known by name to American rock fans, Mr. Peel had been on the BBC's Radio 1 since its inception in 1967 and had a reputation for playing cutting-edge

This seems like a good way to go about doing things, if people bootleg your shows, put out your own of better quality and make it an non-issue. This is taken from Gary Numan's website Nuworld.co.uk While I have no wish to stir up that bootleg debate again I do need to tell you about our plan to film all future Numan gigs. As some of you may have seen recently an investigation has revealed that many of the more serious bootleggers are highly successful businesses turning over multi millions in revenue each year from illegal recordings, DVD becoming a major part of that business. So, our attempts to thwart such endeavours but still give the fans what they want is to film all future Numan shows ourselves and make them availale to fans, primarily via the web site. These DVD 'bootleg' releases will be completely legal and will have all the required clearances and licences to press that are necessary. They will, however, be filmed with a minimum of three cameras, sometim
This is a pretty funny but long article. And people wonder why politicians and bureaucrats have a bad name... In the winter of 2002, with the federal budget stretched thin, President George W. Bush asked Congress to give back money that lawmakers had earmarked for local projects so it could be used instead to fund the Pell grant program, which helps needy students pay for college. One of the local projects that had drawn particularly harsh scrutiny was a $273,000 federal grant that U.S. Rep. Sam Graves had procured to study goth culture in Blue Springs, Missouri. "It's one of those priorities that my constituents asked me to fight for," Graves told an Associated Press reporter at the time. Congress refused to return the money, and that spring the watchdog group Citizens Against Government Waste singled out the goth grant as one of the worst examples of pork-barrel spending its staff had encountered as it filtered through thousands for its 2002 Pig Book. Soon,
Good news for some, hideous news for others. Either way it's going to happen and we'll be up to our eyeballs and ears in "wildboys" just in time for Xmas... NEW YORK (Billboard) - It may have taken 21 years to get a new album from Duran Duran's original lineup, but it took the five members only 24 hours to decide to get back together. Duran Duran's new album, ``Astronaut,'' which Epic Records/Sony Music will release Oct. 12 in North America and Oct. 11 in other territories, is the first studio album from the original lineup since 1983's ``Seven and the Ragged Tiger.'' ``Astronaut'' reunites lead singer Simon LeBon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, guitarist Andy Taylor, bassist John Taylor and drummer Roger Taylor.Roger and Andy Taylor quit the band in the mid-1980s; John Taylor exited in 1997. Although LeBon and Rhodes continued Duran Duran with various lineups, the question always remained: Would the original members ever get

I saw this announcement earlier today and thought it might be worth dragging myself out to in January. It's still a ways off, but I've heard good things about VNV Nation live, even if they are basically a karaoke band, and it'd be very cool to see the guys from Front 242... Patrick Codenys and Richard 23 of Front 242 are going to be Djing under their DJ project's name "Coder23". They are opening for VNV Nation. This is pretty cool to see. I thought DCD was something that was broken up and never going to happen again, so this should be good... While Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry are discussing a new album, plans for a reunion tour are taking shape. Lisa Gerrard in a post on her website: "The lineup of musicians is absolutely phenomenal, actually it is better then that, this will without doubt be the Dead Can Dance concert to see and hear, it is hard to contain my excitement and anticipation." The tour will take place sometime in 2005, but no locations are set yet.
This is the sort of news that drives me nuts. Who do you want to believe in the big question of who is being screwed in the music industry? It seems to me that like usual it is the artists themselves and the customer, obviously p2p sharing is not doing too much to bring down the corporate giants. Well, I guess we'll see how this all shakes out, so much for playing field being levelled for the little guy... From arstechnica.com by Ken "Caesar" Fisher Everyone knows that piracy can affect an artist's bottom line, and very few people would argue that artists, programmers, and the like, should work for free in all instances. Indeed, while there is a lot of hostility to lobbying groups like the RIAA, most folks do want to support the bands and songwriters that they like. That's why the RIAA (and sister organization, the MPAA) often use the notion of the starving artist to justify their attacks on piracy-it plays at the heart strings and gives a sense of im

I'm not too sure what to make of this. Has our little bald vegan/christian/techno god gone to the darkside of strippers and cocaine? Does it really matter? Will his next album be better and more energetic? One can only hope the next one will be better, "18" didn't do much for me. I guess Moby elsewhere is saying this never happened, it seems a bit far fetched to me, but what do I know, stranger things have happened. Read and be entertained or not... Ananova.com says: He said a lapdancer offered to dance for him, but he gave her $400 (about £220) just to talk, the New York Daily News reported. The paper quotes Moby saying, "She gave me a bag of cocaine. I'm 38, but I'd never done coke before. I didn't know you were supposed to share." When Moby told told the stripper he had snorted all her cocaine she "got very aggressive" and he tried to calm her down by buying a $400 bottle of Champagne. He said that around 2am
Isn't this what the world is crying out for? More dM remixes please, I don't have enough. I'm sure some will be good and make it a worthwhile purchase, it's good to see that dM remixes are an industry unto themselves... To be released on October 25th on Mute Records "Remixes 81-04" is a 2-disc set spanning over 20 years of Depeche Mode's pioneering remixes. The album is a compendium of Depeche Mode classics remixed by some of the best remixers in the world, including Underworld, Goldfrapp, Air, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Timo Maas, Flood and of course Depeche Mode themselves. It is also released as a limited edition triple disc set, featuring a bonus disc of rare remixes. Included are new remixes of "Halo" by Goldfrapp, "Barrel Of A Gun" by Underworld, "Home" remixed by Air as well as a new mix of "Enjoy The Silence" by Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda. I always was a sucker for The Cult and Ian Astbury and his mystic mumbo jumbo, so it's interesting to see what he's up to these days and what projects have come and gone by him... Former THE CULT frontman Ian Astbury recently gave an interview to the Poptones web site about his work with THE DOORS 21ST CENTURY and his near-audition with VELVET REVOLVER, among other topics. Several excerpts from the interview follow: Poptones: Oliver Stone asked you to play Jim Morrison in his 1989 epic "The Doors". You turned him down but in 2004 you are now playing with key DOORS members. Why the change of heart? Ian Astbury: "You have to realise that was in 1989. I was wrapped up in being Ian Astbury in THE CULT. So when I got the call from Oliver Stone I had to say no. And I would have said no because I didn't relate to Hollywood people. And I felt that Oliver Stone was a voyeur to rock'n'roll. It was all so shallow and laughable." Poptones: What s
Chris Vrenna is a hell of a producer, I remixed one of his songs a couple of years ago and he's definitely got talent. More than Trent Reznor? Probably not, but who knows what would have been? I'm sure either way it'll be a quality product, umm, I mean good song... Producer Chris Vrenna has teamed with Clint Walsh to compose the theme song for the video game "Doom 3" expected to hit stores on August 3 (and available below). Vrenna's past video game credits include "Quake" while as a member of Nine Inch Nails, "Enter the Matrix" and the upcoming titles "Tabula Rasa" and "Area 51". The "Doom 3" theme song was originally going to be composed by Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor. According to Reznor the project was aborted when time, money and bad management came into play.

u2.com  has announced that a rough-cut of U2's new album, due out this November, went missing during a photo shoot in France this week. U2 now fears that the unfinished recordings will turn up on the internet before the album's official releasedate. It would not be the first time the band sees its material leaked prematurely, months before the official release of "Achtung Baby" the pre-mixed recordings were already widely available in the bootleg circuit. Speaking to U2.Com, Edge said: "A large slice of two years work lifted via a piece of round plastic. It doesn't seem credible but that's what's just happened to us...and it was my CD." The band recently completed much of the recording of the highly anticipated new album in Dublin and have been involved in post-production work in France. French police is now investigating the theft. The album, which has not yet been named, is the first new studio album from U2 since 2000's "All T
More news on the upcoming NIN album.  Ok, so Trent is doing the production himself and has Dave Grohl doing the drumming on a lot of the songs, that sounds like a decent combination, but will it ever come out if he is behind the helm?  Will it ever be perfect enough for him to release?  I guess time will tell...   While NIN is searching its way through 20 tracks that are considered for possible inclusion on the record, Trent Reznor has announced during a chat with fans on his member only area of his website that he will be producing the record, entitled "Bleed Through", himself. Trent: "I feel very inspired right now and I want this record to be what's in my head, for better or worse." Alan Moulder will be on board as a sounding board / co-producer / mixer as well as James Brown for some tracking. And the list doesn't finish there: "Atticus Ross is my right-hand man and programmer and has been from the start of this record, Leo Herrera is engineering,
Ya know, I'm still wondering if this album will ever see the light of day, but it does have some interesting contributors... Former NIRVANA/QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE drummer Dave Grohl recorded a guest appearance on drums for the new NINE INCH NAILS album, "Bleedthrough", during a session at Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, Ca. this past Friday (July 9). As previously reported, the follow-up to NINE INCH NAILS' 1999 double album, "The Fragile", is set to feature production contributions from Rick Rubin (RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, AUDIOSLAVE, SLAYER), Atticus Ross (12 ROUNDS, TAPEWORM), Jerome Dillon, Leo Herrera, and mix engineer Rich Costey. Among the songtitles set to appear on the CD are "The Line Begins To Blur", "Every Day Is Exactly The Same" and "My Dead Friend". No release date has yet been scheduled.

Tune in, Turn on, Feck off Indeed, what I was just planning to do...
Ok, this article is a couple of years old, but I think the author's point are still valid... Industrial music suffers from an inability to get anywhere in the world. Is this because it’s just not a style that is accessible for the masses? Or is there something in the very nature of what’s being heard that prevents it from gaining any further popularity? When Nine Inch Nails “broke”, it never dragged industrial into the spotlight. Nor did any of the other artists, such as Stabbing Westward or Gravity Kills, that had mainstream success shed any light onto the underground… It’s hard to try to tell yourself that industrial just isn’t palatable to the masses, because every GNC commercial for weight-gainer is fraught with badly constructed industrial made with the “Methods Of Mayhem” sample disc and every car commercial on TV is backed by jagged hard-electro beats. So why isn’t industrial finding any acceptance? I personally find industrial a hard genre to get into these day
Ok, now this is pretty funny or sad depending on how you look at it, yes, once you have a hit song the record company is going to expect you to keep churning them out, but come on try and have some depth in what you're putting out there, I wonder who came up with this idea to put these songs back to back, listen and hear what I'm talking about... Ok, what surprises me is not what Morrissey says in this article , but that there aren't more artists that are saying similar things, what happened to all the loudmouth singers of years gone by, you know a ton of them are probably still thinking it? What about all the psuedo-pop punk rockers of today posturing, I guess they are too worried about not getting their CDs sold in Walmart and Best Buy to be too critical of our current President. I'm not political myself, nor have I ever claimed to be, but were is the voice of desent other than on the editorial page of the newspaper? Anyway, here's the short article: According to the Manchester Evening News, Morrissey wished death upon President George W. Bush while on stage. When announcing the death of ex-President Ronald Regan, he added a note about wishing it was George W. Bush instead. The singer's camp didn't deny the claim, saying that Morrissey was simply excercising his political views.
This new blogger format is pissing me off. Ok, to reiterate what no one else saw and is now wiped out. Covenent is looking to make the definitive EBM album, which I say "more power to them, someone should do it." Of course I'd love to see an unknown band of upcomers do it, but hey, if it happens I don't really care where it comes from and of the established acts I think Covenent is one of the few bands that could pull it off. Here is the article from Side-Line.com as to what Covenent had to say about it: Covenant wants to make the definite EBM album: "It was actually something of a provocation, half joke, half serious. But I do think that a lot of interesting reinterpretations of classic EBM has surfaced the last few years: Terence Fixmer, Thomas P Heckman, Sven Vath, DJ Hell and also scene bands. And in good Covenant tradition we have our ears deep in this sound, probing and scanning, picking up ideas that we can use to evolve our own special sound. Of c
Ok, this looks like it should be a good one to go and pick up. Black Tape for a Blue Girl doing a Dead Can Dance song, sounds like a good match to me... "The Lotus Eaters" is the title of a new 2CD Dead Can Dance tribute, out on the metal Black Lotus on June 7th. 27 bands bring 27 interpretations of which 26 exclusive to this release. The 2CD holds such big names as Faith and the Muse, Persephone, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Arcana, Ataraxia, Persephone, Liv Kristine, Ulver, Jarboe, Anathema, Amber Asylum, Trail of Tears, Monumentum, etc. Tracks covered are: In the wake of adversity, Spirit, Cantara, Bylar, Mesmerism, The arcane, Windfall/ Summoning of the muse. Cardinal sin, Rakim, How fortunate is the man with none, The lotus eaters, Avatar, The Wind that Shakes the Barley, Fortune present gifts not according to the book, American dreaming, Black sun, In power we entrust the love advocated, The obiguitous Mr. Lovegrove, Anywhere out of the world, Cantara, In the kingdo
Ok, this is pretty a interesting line-up. And they are coming to Denver, I always love when we're not forgotten... Less than a week after headlining the Coachella festival in the Southern California desert, goth pioneers the Cure have unveiled plans for a full U.S. tour this summer. The Curiosa Festival 2004 will feature the Cure headlining a bill that also includes three bands plainly influenced by Robert Smith and company: Interpol, the Rapture and Mogwai. A second stage will also be part of the traveling road show, with Muse, Thursday, Cursive, Melissa Auf Der Maur, Cooper Temple Clause and Head Automatica rotating as performers. The Cure formed in 1976, and only iconoclastic singer/songwriter Smith remains from the group's initial lineup. Simon Gallup, who joined the group in 1979, is the only other longstanding member in the current lineup. The group plans to release a new eponymous album on June 29, the band's first LP since 2000's Bloodflowers. The

This disappoints me to see that Orbital are breaking apart, the Hartnoll brothers put out some amazing music over the years and were a huge influence on me when I was doing more electronica inspired music in the late 90's. Ye will be missed... After 15 years working together as Orbital, Paul and Phil Hartnoll have announced that their forthcoming LP the “Blue Album” will be their last. Following the album’s release on 21st of June, Orbital will play Brixton Academy on 25th of June followed by their last ever English live show, closing the second stage on Sunday June 27th at Glastonbury. “I think we feel that Orbital has run it’s course,” says Paul Hartnoll. “We’re both pursuing different avenues with our music. And we’ve been sat, as brothers, in the same room for 15 years now–and studios are always confined spaces–I think it’s time for a change.” Since their first single, ‘Chime’ entered the top 20 in April 1990 Orbital have released six albums and developed a l

Here's an interview with Alan Wilder of Depeche Mode and to a lesser reknown fame with his solo project Recoil . It's too bad to hear that there's nothing new in the works from him, but at least he's getting some perspective of life and getting to hang out and help raise his kids, there's lots to be said for that rather than being a studio shut in...

Hey, well, I got a pair of new songs up, I like to think of them as the twin sistas mixes. There is A is for Asps(Sista Mix featuring Ride Flame) at soundclick.com and Blood Red Sista(featuring Ride Flame at garageband.com) . Basically both of the mixes use Ride Flame 's poem "Sista" for the lyrics(you can see the words to the poem at Ride Flame's blog, look for her Feb. 17th entry) and my music for the backdrop, one version being quite modern sounding and one harkening back to more ancient times.

I'm not sure why I keep putting so much stuff up on here about Robert Smith and the Cure, one might think I'm a huge fan, really I'm a small fan, but I do enjoy their work quite a bit, but not to any obsessive lenghths. With that said here's an interview with Blank and Jones talking about "A Forest" with Robert Smith. I'm sure it will do well in the clubs, as for is it as good as the original, nah... Blank & Jones: Interview with Robert Smith Piet Blank: So, Robert, we're very proud finally meeting you, because these days it's like one is sitting in that studio and the other one is sitting in the other studio. And funny enough, we had to shoot a video to finally meet again. But we're still very curious to find out what made you say yes, you know, because we wanted to reinterpret the song "A Forest" twenty years later. Robert Smith: Why I said yes? Piet Blank: Yes. Robert Smith: Because you sent me a load of

Wow, I'm excited that these guys one these awards, they are on the Tristraum "Shiver" CD along with me, and their remix is amazing, so I'm glad to see them get some recognition. Cheers... Well, it looks like Blutengel has a new album coming out, it's good to see that Chris Pohl is still at it and infecting the world with his music and attractive co-singers. I've seen live footage of a couple of their shows and shock is the effect they seem to be going for, but maybe I'm just too jaded these days but even with all the blood and psuedo-bondage antics I wasn't shocked or outraged in the least, but some of the songs are good and his singers are easy on the eyes. I'll probably be checking into this CD more once it's out and see if it breaks new ground... March 22nd 2004 will see the release of "Demon kiss", the long awaited new album from German darkwave / electro legends Blutengel. The album will be available across 3 seperate formats (standard CD, Limited 2CD and Limited 3CD boxset). These guys are very clever, I'm surprised no one has thought of this before... Eisbrecher has decided to make a statement for its fans and for music consumers in general and is releasing their album ("Eisbrecher") including a bonus DVD with 2 blank CD-Rs which have the same label as the CD itself. Alexx Wesselsky (singer and head of the group): "We are of the opinion that the music buyers are criminalized enough and have been made responsible for the wretched state in the music industry. We are giving them the chance to make 2 legal copies for private use with 'official blanks'. It can't always be that the end users have to take the blame for something that international corporations have arranged with their artist-burning methods." Eisbrecher's record label ZYX Music supports this action and will deliver the first 5000 albums of the group with 2 blanks each. Eisbrecher are Alexx Wesselsky (lyrics/vocals) and Noel Pix (composition/keyboar
A review on releasemagazine.net of the new Creatures album "Hai!" It's always great to see that Souixie and Budgie are still knocking out good music. And Taiko drums to boot, I'm always excited to hear big drums... Exploding from the primal result of a collaboration with one of Japan's premier Taiko drummers, Leonard Ito, The Creatures bless us with their fourth studio release, the viciously engaging "Hai!". This album carries on in the tradition of their debut "Feast" which was released back in 1983. Spontaneous with a vengeance and blistering with delirious arrangements, Siouxsie and Budgie hit the mark and pass with flying colours. The ingredients to this hellbent offering are quite simply her voice and a percussive backbone which is steely in its resilience, nuanced with the years of working together and re-born in the fires of a collaboration which was a long time in coming. The rumbling opening of "Say Yes!" ushers us i

I'm going to see Fiction 8 tonight at the Gothic theater in Englewood. I've been working on a remix of their song "Stranger in my Skin" for the last month or so. Here is a recent interview of them for a look into what they are about... "Forever, Neverafter" is your second album release. What does it feel like to hold the finished album in your hands? Michael: This one was particularly gratifying. We spent almost 3 years on this album, trying to exorcise the demons and it feels wonderful to finally be able to lay this stuff to rest. Steven: It's definitely a relief to get this one finished. It was probably the most personal release we have done, and a lot of ourselves are ingrained in it. First of all tell us something about yourselves? What was the reason for founding Fiction 8? Michael: For me, I always wanted to produce music. I was really inspired by Dave , Ogilvie, Alex Sadkin, Roli Mossiman, Gavin MacKillop ... basically pro

I went and got the new Crystal Method CD "Legion of Boom" today and found myself amazed at how much of it sounded like their songs of yesteryear, but there is still some quality songs on there and the production is top notch, I've seen them twice live once when no one knew who they were and were just trying to get the word out about their new "Vegas" CD and once when they came back the same tour after "Busy Child" was on every soundtrack imaginable, both times were good, but it certainly was better when hardly anyone else was there. And then I happened to see this article and it made me think that the return of the big beat sound is probably being launched again, but this time it won't have much of an impact or at least not like it did 8 or 10 years ago, hopefully I'll be wrong, but I doubt it... The Prodigy have revealed details of their first studio album since 1997's The Fat of the Land. The band says it sounds "sexier a

Ok, so I'm finally putting up a link to Ride Flame's Road of Entities Blog and I thought this was a pretty interesting picture as well. Stay tuned for more as it developes...

Another boutique label by a record producer, John Fryer's Something To Listen To record label , luckily I actually really like a bunch of the bands he's worked with in the past and if he can get more quality music out to the public more power to him. 'Something To Listen To' is the name of a new label set up by noone else than John Fryer who produced bands suchs Fad Gadget, NIN, Yazoo, The Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, Depeche Mode, Die Krupps, Lush, Wire, Laibach, Fields Of The Nephelim and many more. The UK based label so far signed the following bands: Esoterica, Sundealers, Audiodummi, Plastic Toys, Living With Eating Disorder, Kitty Stockings, Prince Jellyfish, Red Kid and Licky. The first releases should be released this very month. Starting out at Blackwing Studio in London, John’s early career saw him working with several wellknown 4 A.D. and Mute artists. He later on went on to enjoy massive success in modern rock with the likes of Stabbing Westward, H
