I'm not sure if this makes me happy or not. It sounds pretty cheezy, but that's half of what to like about Devo. Spuds with cheese please.. After Devo, meet Devo 2.0., a project for which all five members of Devo regrouped. The aim of the project is to re-record some of the band's best known songs, including the 1980 hit "Whip It!" with vocals provided by a quintet of kids. Also included will be "Cyclops" and "The Winner", the first new studio tracks from Devo in nearly 20 years. The "Devo 2.0" CD will be released on March 17 via Disney Sound. A companion DVD will feature animated and live action videos for each of the tracks directed by Devo bassist and co-founder Gerry Casale. In addition to Devo 2.0, Casale also records with Jihad Jerry & the Evildoers for the Warner Music Group's digital-only label, Cordless Records.
Well, this is good news. I'm always happy to hear new music by Covenant. Lots of hype is already mounthing on this, let's hope it lives up to it... The release date of the first new single EP, "Ritual Noise", by Scandinavia's finest Covenant has been set for January 20 and will be limited to just 5000 copies. Besides remixes of the title track, the single will also hold the non-album track "Crossroads" and a sticker with the artwork of the new album. The complete tracklist is as follows: Ritual Noise (Edit), Ritual Noise (Main Version), The Island (Unreleased), Ritual Noise (Alpha Jet), XRDS (Unreleased) and Ritual Noise (Terence Fixmer Remix). A North American edition seems in the pipeline as well. Out on March 24, 2006 is the long awaited new album "Skyshaper". Here is a description of the album by Sebastian Koch from the leading Italian distribution company Audioglobe: "Believe me or not, ‘Skyshaper’ has – according to my very own per
Ok, so I went to their concert earlier this month and had a great time. But, when you mix erotic piercings and small children, hilarity is bound to ensue... Depeche Mode Singer Talks Butt Piercings Nov 28, 2005 David Gahan recently removed a "erotic" piercing after his children began asking him questions about it. In an interview with Blender, the Depeche Mode front man revealed that he recently removed a ring-style piercing from his taint – that stretch of skin that lies in the no-man’s-land between the testicles and anus – after his kids began asking him to explain the jewelry. Gahan, who’s on tour to support Depeche Mode’s latest, Playing the Angel (2005, Sire), told the magazine that he originally dropped trou for the needle after hearing the taint piercing was one of the “most erotic” piercings on the market.
While not exactly dark music news, this is disappointing to say the least... From Newsweek.com The Gospel According to Anne By David Gates Oct. 31, 2005 issue - Sometimes Anne Rice won't leave her bedroom for days on end—and neither would you. Glass doors open onto a terrace that looks over the red-tiled roofs of La Jolla, Calif., to the Pacific Ocean. A live-in staffer brings meals to the table at the foot of her ornately carved wooden bed, which faces an ornately carved stone fireplace. She exercises in a huge bike-in closet. She's got two computers and enough books to last her a year. Splendid isolation? Splendid, sure. But she's often got family visiting in a downstairs guest suite, she reads The New York Times every morning—"Nicholas Kristof is a hero to me"—watches news "till I can't stand it anymore," and spends up to an hour and a half a day e-mailing with her extraordinarily faithful readers. They've been worried about her. After 25 nove
Wow, this is sad to hear. God Lives Under Water was a very cool act and definitely underrated... GOD LIVES UNDERWATER VOCALIST DAVID REILLY PASSES AWAY IN PA HOSPITAL. Corporate Punishment is very sad to announce the passing of our good friend, God Lives Under vocalist David Reilly. Complications from an untreated infection are the reported cause of death for Reilly, who was pronounced dead around 5:15 AM on Sunday Oct 16th . God Lives Underwater was established in 1995 and was quickly signed to Rick Rubin’s American Recordings. The group had the radio hit, “From Your Mouth” from their 1998 Interscope/1500 Release, Life In The So-Called Space Age, which was heralded as a cross between Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails. Corporate Punishment Records released David's first and only solo recording, the EP Inside in 2004. Recently, David signed with Ruff Nation/Universal who were slated to release his debut full length, How Humans Rx, in early 2006. ( Some of these recordings can be fou
This is one of the better interviews that I've read with Trent Reznor. And the first place that I've seen it printed that he was a heroin addict, usually they just mention that he's sober, but never go any deeper than that. From: Reznor's Edge Nine Inch Nails returns, angry as ever, and With Teeth By Jonathan Zwickel Trent Reznor is not unhappy. He's not tortured, distraught, deluded, strung-out, miserable, or bitter. The Nine Inch Nails auteur is, however, angry. The bile that seethes through With Teeth, his first record in six years, which debuted at number one in May, is the emotional link to his first three, renowned for the bleakness of their man/machine collision. Teeth is also Reznor's first output after a drawn-out dance with heroin; its vicious focus reveals that sobriety has brought a newfound sense of purpose. Industrial music's prime instigator spoke to New Times on a recent morning before heading to his next tour stop in Dallas (Reznor and Nin
Well, glad to see that replacing the drummer isn't going to slow ol' Trent and the boys down in their world tour. It's amazing that they could get someone on short notice handle it as I'm sure it'd be a challenge to get someone on board and functioning smoothly. Although I'd assume that if you made it through the tour you'd have a very nice blurb on your musical resume'. From NME.com: Australian sticksman Alex Carapetis has been named as the newest addition to the group, after Jerome Dillon was forced to quit their current US tour in order to seek treatment for an unspecified heart condition. Carapetis played his first show with the band on Friday at the Chicago Allstate Arena (October 14), replacing temporary stand-in Josh Freese . Freese filled in for Dillon at Nine Inch Nails ' shows in Utah (October 4) and Denver (October 5). As previously reported, Dillon was hospitalised for the second time following the band's show in Sacramento
Yeah, I got my Depeche Mode tickets for Denver's Magness Arena show in November. 2nd row in the balcony. They were after charges $91 each, for that kind of money I'd like Depeche Mode to come out and personally serve me dinner. Oh well, I'm looking forward to it and it should be fun, or at least it better be...
It looks like it's been announced. The name and release date of the upcoming Andriod Lust CD. Personally I'm excited to hear what it sounds like and what new angst is ready to pour forth. This is from Shikhee herself: I'm very happy with the master! I think it's time to officially announce the name of the album: Android Lust - Devour, Rise, and Take Flight There are 12 tracks, and we're working on the artwork as we speak. It'll be off to the pressing plant in a couple of weeks, then we start the pre-promotion before it's January 2006 release!

Well, it's interesting to see someone do something different, a sex album could be good, bad, or indifferent just like sex itself, but the idea behind this is pretty good... Debuting in October 2005, Jessica Vale is to release "The Sex Album". You can visit Jessica Vale official website for more information. The features sounds of the CD(with the exception of Vale’s vocals) are taken entirely from the recordings of live sex that were manipulated into dark electronic and ambient music. This is the first release from artist/producer Jessica Vale, who collaborated with fellow NYC producer, Ivan Evangelista to make the record. In March 2003 Vale and Evangelista began pursuing couples that were willing to participate in the project. Shortly after they started their search, they found seven couples of different sexual orientations that were interested. The participants were strategically strapped with microphones and every sound from racing hearts and moans to their most in
Honestly, I'm very excited about this. Android Lust is in a class all by themselves with intensity that is matched by no one that I can think of off the top of my head. Let's hope it's a good one... "Dragonfly" is the new single pulled from the yet untitled forthcoming Android Lust album to be released in January '06. The single should hit the shop shelves on October 18th on Projekt Records and features a remix by I, Parasite and an exclusive b-side. The yet untitled album will be Android Lust's third full length to date.
It's alwayst good to see that Siouxsie and Budgie are still doing it after all of these years. The newer Creatures tracks that they have on there are very cool, so this is going to the top of my list of things to get. Here's to hoping it's good... Siouxsie Sioux’s dream of playing live with a classical orchestra became reality at the Royal Festival Hall last October – and was captured on the DVD "Dreamshow". From classic Banshees tracks to Creatures singles, and including tracks never performed live before, "Dreamshow" has it all. Live guests for that performance included Kodo drummer Leonard Eto and cellist Martin McCarrick. Special features include footage of the rehearsals with the orchestra, soundcheck, exclusive interviews with Sioux, Budgie and the rest of the band as well as an exclusive selection of tracks culled from Siouxsie’s last appearance at London’s legendary punk venue, the 100 Club. Tracklist: 1) Say Yes! 2) Around The World 3) 7 Tears
Heh, more info on the upcoming Depeche Mode album. I've been listening to their older CDs recently and will probably buy this album regardless, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll be worthwhile... Depeche Mode have announced the title of their upcoming album. The album will be called "Playing The Angel". To be released on October 17th it will hold the following songs: Precious, Sinner in Me, Suffer Well, John the Revelator, Macrovision (with Martin Gore on lead), A Pain That Im Used To, I Want It All and a few other tracks, 3 of which have been written by frontman Dave Gahan. According to www.depeche-mode.com the album will be preceded by the single "Precious" to be released in early October. During the band's press conference in Düsseldorf on June 16th, songwriter Martin Gore also revealed that the band might release a new live DVD: "We don't have concrete plans, but we probably will release one, yes. We're gonna be doing a lo
While I thought their last album was crap, I'm always hopeful that dM will return to its once former glory. I know that's a bit of a pipe dream. Oh well, one can hope... EMI has confirmed us that Depeche Mode is to hold a press conference on June 16th in Dusseldorf, Germany. According to the EMI spokeswoman the band will announce a few selected dates of their Fall tour together with details of their upcoming album which is tentatively planned for release on October 17th in Europe. The band has in the meantime revealed more details on the forthcoming album in an interview with Q Magazine. The first working titles announced include "Pain", "Suffer Well", "Everything", "Free", "Sinner In Me", "Martyr For Love" and "Macro". Dave Gahan has been quoted saying that the album sounds somewhere between Violator and SOFAD. But knowing that in the past he compared "Exciter" to "Black Celebration" th
Collide has always been definitely an impressive band to me album-wise, so this seems like it should be a good thing if they can pull it off likewise live... After 5 albums and 11 years together, Collide will finally play a live show in Los Angeles. The six-piece live band will make their Hollywood debut at the historic El Rey Theatre on Thursday, April 14th. Along with Statik and kaRIN, Collide's expanded live show line-up includes Scott Landes on guitar, Rogerio Silva on guitar, Chaz Pease on drums, and Kai Kurosawa on bass and warr guitar. In 1995, Collide self-released their first cassette demo, "The Crimson Trial". Ten years later they have 5 additional full-length albums and their own record label, Noiseplus Music. Their latest release, "Vortex", is a double CD that features remixes of songs from previous albums as well as three covers.
Finally, some non-death-related news... The former Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan frontman, Billy Corgan, will release his debut solo album "TheFutureEmbrace" on June 21st before beginning an American tour. The 12-song record includes a cover of the Bee Gees’ "To Love Somebody" featuring backing vocals from The Cure’s Robert Smith, while former Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin features on "Dia". Chamberlain also has a solo album due through Sanctuary Records. The album will be released on June 21 and the complete tracklisting is: "All Things Change", "Mina Loy (M.O.H.)", "TheCameraEye", "To Love Somebody", "A100", "DIA", "Now (And Then)", "I'm Ready", "Walking Shade", "Sorrows (in blue)", "Pretty, pretty STAR" and "Strayz".
Ok, so more death in the music world. Sad that only people dying seems to be worth mentioning to me these days. Is this dark music news, not really, but it's music news that is dark, does that count? Anyway, without knowing the full facts, it seems like a terrible waste, especially since he's got two young girls... Crowded House drummer found dead 28.03.05 9.00am Crowded House drummer Paul Hester has been found dead in a park in Melbourne. Hester, 46, the father of two young girls, failed to return home from walking his two dogs on Saturday night, Sydney's Daily Telegraph newspaper said today. It said police found his body yesterday in Elsternwick Park near his home. Police said there were no suspicious circumstances, and friends said they were not aware of Hester having been depressed. Hester quit Crowded House in 1994 but had reinvented himself as a drummer for hire, cafe owner and charismatic frontman of Music Max Sessions on Foxtel. He lived in Elwood -- a fashion
Once again maybe not dark music related, but Roxy Music's Avalon is one of my favorite albums of all time and I used to be quoted in saying, "If you play this album on a date and you don't get laid there may be something wrong with you." Legendary rockers ROXY MUSIC have reformed to record their first album since 1983. Frontman BRYAN FERRY has joined PHIL MANZANERA, ANDY MACKAY, PAUL THOMPSON and BRIAN ENO for the reunion. The project marks the first time Eno has worked with Roxy Music since 1973's FOR YOUR PLEASURE disc and will be the first album Roxy Music have recorded since AVALON twenty-two years ago (83). The LOVE IS THE DRUG band, who briefly reformed for a live performance in 2001 without Eno, have also announced a gig at Britain's ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL on 11 June (05).

Wow, this is the best live band/singer picture I've seen in quite some time. It's Wendy Yanko of Flesh Field live in Portland. I honestly don't know much about the band, but I liked what I heard and saw from their site. If they ever come to Denver I'd love to see them. Make sure you check out the audio clips as well at flesh-field.com ...

I'm not sure Fiona Apple really qualifies as dark music, but the fact that her label, Sony, won't release her new music since it's not commercial enough, AKA no hit single. Her fans have banded together to try and persuade Sony to release the music as is. You can find more info via FreeFiona.com .
Ok, so I've been reading a bit more about the podcasting/XM at slashdot.org and I am wondering where and how I get my music involved with it? If it is the vehicle that gives good unheard indie music to the masses why can't I find my music as part of it? I've seen my music only a couple of times mentioned on peoples' blogs and in a couple of peoples' winamp generated playlists or listings of their .mp3 collection, but that's not the same now is it? Hmm, I guess this is me just wondering out loud...
I am anxious to see how it goes with the whole upcoming podcast phenomenon. Will it give power back to the listener or be just another way for the large music corporations to get your money, I'll guess well wait and see. Chances are it'll be the first for a quickly fleeting period of time and then the latter for time eternal... From nytimes.com By JOHN MARKOFF Published: February 25, 2005 SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 24 - The primarily amateur Internet audio medium known as podcasting will take a small, hopeful step on Friday toward becoming the commercial Web's next big thing. That step is planned by Odeo, a five-person start-up that is based in a walk-up apartment in this city's Mission District and was co-founded by a Google alumnus. The company plans to introduce a Web-based system that is aimed at making a business of podcasting - the process of creating, finding, organizing and listening to digital audio files that range from living-room ramblings to BBC newscasts. Ok, so I was looking through the referring links for the Lair of the Asp blog and I had to laugh, someone had looked up "strippers on cocaine" and I was listed as the 13th top site for Yahoo Australia. This was in reference of story that I commented on quite a while back about Moby doing cocaine with strippers. Also, I seem to show up pretty high in the links for people looking for new info on Ian Astbury of The Cult, which I guess there's worse things to be associated with, I'm just amused that other people are still interested in what he is up to since it's been a while since anything big has come from him, even the last Cult album was a pretty small affair promotionally and the Doors of the 21st Century seemed to get more press about the legal aspects of the band/tour than the music did. Oh well, long live people's curiosity in the dark side of music and celebrity...
Hmm, not music related, but sad none the less. I guess it's interesting for people, including myself, when other people die, but it's very interesting when interesting people die... From CNN.com: Journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson, who unleashed the concept of "gonzo journalism" in books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself in the head Sunday at his home near Aspen, Colorado, police and his family said. "On Feb. 20, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson took his life with a gunshot to the head at his fortified compound in Woody Creek, Colo.," said a statement issued by Thompson's son, Juan Thompson, to the Aspen Daily News as reported by the Denver Post. "The family will shortly provide more information about memorial service and media contacts. Hunter prized his privacy, and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family." A dispatcher for the Pitkin County Sheriff's Departm
I'm always a bit leary about things that say they can make something cheap sound just like something more expensive. So in that catagory goes this device. I haven't heard it so I can't really comment on the sound quality myself, but an interesting concept none the less... OK audiophiles (even audiophobes), listen up! Now there's a way to simulate surround sound from that old TV set without spending big bucks on a six- or eight-speaker system. The folks at Xitel have just introduced the SOUNDaround ($99.95), which will reproduce the effects of true surround sound through two speakers, whether they be headphones or those attached to your "stereo" TV. All you have to do is attach your DVD player, game console or other device to the unit and then output the sound to your stereo, TV set or headphones and you're instantly immersed in what Xitel likes to call "a 360 degree wall of sound." Using SRS TruSurround, SRS TruBass and SRS Dialog Clarity techn
Now why couldn't I figured this out and done something similar? Instead I seem to be bent on chasing the dark music muse and occationally blogging about it... " Michael Buffington chose to build a weblog using highly automated content aggregation tools around a single keyword, asbestos, because of the high click through rate associated with the ad. 'The subject matter, while weighty and all that, is of little importance to me. It's not that I don't have opinions on asbestos and asbestos reform, because I do. The whole point of the site is to experiment with an idea. I built a tool that helps me aggregate topical news with the help of Google's Alert system. So far it works wonderfully. But there's a second motive as well. Right now asbestos reform and asbestos related litigation is on fire. Lawyers are paying anywhere from $15-100 per click through on Google ads. The second part of this big experiment is to see if I can capture some of that click through
Whle the last Garbage album didn't do as much for me as the other two did I am happy to see this coming out. Butch Vig's production kills me on how good it is so it'll be interesting to see what he and the others have come up with this go 'round. This comes from the Bleed Like Me Countdown Site ... Bleed Like Me Garbage's 4th album titled Bleed Like Me is slated for release on the 11th April 2005 world wide (Warner), and North America on April 12th (Geffen, and Festival Mushroom in Australia). This greatly anticipated album follows up three powerful and critically acclaimed albums, Garbage, Version 2.0 and BeautifulGarbage from the Madison Wisconsin based band. Featuring the powerful voice and lyrics of Shirley Manson (the Queen) and the trio of producer musicians (Steve, Butch and Duke) this album should be a return to the bands darker roots. Official Track list The following tracks aren't in album order (unknown as yet), and there is not hint yet a
It always makes me happy to see that there is a new New Order release, sadly, other than some of the singles, I haven't really liked any of the albums the whole way through in a very long time. But, let's hope there's at least some good singles out of the 3 planned... New Order's newest release, "Waiting For The Sirens Call", will be divided between guitar tracks in the vein of the band's previous album "Get Ready" and the synth-based tunes, New Order's trademark. Previous to the album, a single, "Krafty", will be released. "Krafty" is New Order's first single since 2002. The tracklist looks something like this: "Lordsy", "Road To Ruin", "Waiting For The Sirens' Call", "Krafty", "I Told You So", "Pop 1", "Minidisk 2", "Jet", "Fast Synth", "Turn" and "Working Overtime". The second single (out of 3), &quo

Ok, so after a name change and pushed back date, it looks like this should be ready to fly, of course it looked like it was going to happen earlier too, mind games I tell you, or at least politics... Trent Reznor has revealed the title of the next Nine Inch Nails album. The final title "With Teeth" comes after Trent Reznor scrapped the provisional working title "Bleedthrough" back in November. The recordings have now been finished and the band is at the moment rehearsing the new material to prepare for a tour. "With Teeth" is scheduled for a March release through the Nothing parent Interscope. It was produced by Alan Moulder (Depeche Mode, Jesus and Mary Chain, Smashing Pumpkins) and is the follow up to the last Nine Inch Nails album "The Fragile" released in 1999. In other NIN news, Trent Reznor has also remixed U2's "Vertigo". The remix will be featured as a B-side on the next U2 single "Sometimes You Can't Make
Hey, what happened? I didn't end up on anyone's top 100 blogs of the 2004 or top anything. Not that I'm too surprised, I guess I was just blythely wishing. At any rate here's a list of some of my favorite CDs of this year: Skinny Puppy - The Greater Wrong of the Right Wolfsheim - Casting Shadows The Cruxshadows - The Fortress in Flames EP Fixmer McCarthy - Freefall Through a Screen Remixes Orbital - Blue Album Anyway, Happy New Year and here's to even better music in 2005...
